Apple Hill Farms was founded in 1957 and eventually grew to over 1,200 acres, with 450 head of purebred Charolais beef cattle, several registered quarter horses, a pheasant hunting preserve and an equestrian riding club. The farm land produced corn, alfalfa, oats and soybeans, supplying more than enough to feed all the farm animals. All operations were conducted in the most natural manner possible, long before the organic food trend became popular. Natural techniques were employed to reduce insect damage, while fertilizer was provided by the cattle and via crop rotation. In the 1960s an extensive effort was made to plant pine trees surrounding almost the entire farm, resulting in thousands of seedlings being added over a period of years. Every year the farm was opened to thousands of school children from the nearby school systems to take guided tours and learn about the conservation efforts maintained within the farm, both of land and wildlife. In order to protect the disappearing habitats of wild animals in the area, 104 acres of the land was given to the YMCA to became the Bruce B. Purdy Nature Preserve. It has three miles of hiking trails, a spring fed pond, forests, wetlands and restored prairies. In 2005 a large portion of the farm land was sold to become an Equestrian Park and the Apple Hill Farms sub-division, which has since become an elegant neighborhood with many multimillion dollar homes. As of this date, only 170 acres of the original farm land remain and are currently for sale. |
